What is the Structural Engineers Foundation of Washington (SEFW)?

SEFW’s mission statement is to “enhance public safety and advance the profession of Structural Engineering through Scholarship, Research, Education, and Outreach.” 

A 501(c)(3) charitable organization, SEFW serves in many capacities to fulfill this goal, such as hosting public forums on topics related to the built environment, awarding scholarships on behalf of the Structural Engineers Association of Washington, producing and promoting educational materials that support Structural Engineering, and much more!

ORIGAMI:  Inspiration in Science, Design, and Structures

  • Wednesday, November 15, 2017
  • 4:30 PM networking reception, 6 PM Presentation
  • Nordstrom Recital Hall, Benaroya Hall, downtown Seattle


  • Tina Hovsepian: President of Cardborigami, an innovative origami non-profit
  • Robert Lang, PhD:  President of Lang Origami, physicist, and scientist featured in “Origami Revolution”
  • Mark Morden, AIA:  Associate Principal at Wiss Janney Elstner in Seattle and leader of local guild “PAPER,” the Puget Area Paperfolding Enthusiasts Roundtable

With the aid of modern mathematics and computers, origami has evolved from an ancient art into a scientific and engineering application for fields such as robotics, space exploration, medicine, and even architecture.  The presentation will fascinate engineers, architects, students, scientists,” techies,” and the general public.  

The pre-function networking reception will feature amazing origami creations, a full-size folding cardboard emergency shelter, demonstrations by PAPER, and opportunities for hands-on origami folding.
