Timber Tour in Vancouver, BC

We are excited to announce that we have partnered with Fast + Epp to offer a Timber Tour in Vancouver, BC on Saturday March 10th! Fast + Epp will discuss the design and construction behind the projects, and be able to answer your questions about mass timber and hybrid timber structures. This is an excellent opportunity to see what is happening in the timber building industry and where the industry is going north of the border. Potential projects may include:

  1. Richmond
    1. Richmond Olympic Oval (hybrid glulam primary arches with built-in mechanical systems spanning over 300’. Between the primary elements there are wood wave panels made up of simple 2x4s spanning 40’).
    2. Wilson School of Design (recently completed, featuring massive glulam framing members in a hybrid arrangement with steel deck, concrete, and CLT).
  2. UBC
    1. UBC Transit Shelters (prefabricated glulam lattice with low-profile, fixed moment connections).
    2. UBC Bookstore
    3. Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability (Exposed nail-laminated mass timber floors over glulam framing. The building features a timber moment frame and arched long-span roof with green roof over).
    4. Tallwood House (Brock Commons) (At 18 stories, currently the tallest hybrid mass timber building in the world. Features concrete elevator cores, glulam columns, and CLT floor plates).
  3. Vancouver (time permitting)
    1. MEC Head Office (Four-story, 110,000 sq.ft. commercial building with a structure that features exposed NLT floor panels and glulams framing.

If you are interested in attending but know of another project you’re dying to see, let us know and we can look into adding it.

Key Points:

-There is no charge for the tour itself.
-The tour will start late morning (10 AM) at a central meeting point, to allow time for travel from Seattle.
-Participants will be responsible for travel to and from Vancouver, however we are encouraging carpooling.
-This will obviously require a border crossing, so a current US/Canadian passport, Nexus, WA Enhanced Driver’s License, or Canadian visa is required.
-The tour will end in late afternoon, with possibility of dinner after. If you  wish to stay in Vancouver, you will be responsible for your own accommodations.

If you have questions, e-mail YMG VP Sean Augustino. We look forward to seeing you there!
